MRgFUS vs Gamma Knife
- MRgFUS does not need radiation.
- MRgFUS targeting is functional — doctor checks the target position with special tests beforehand, Gamma-knife is anatomical — doctor targets to coordinates where usually region of interest is located.
- Gamma knife produces larger lesion volumes. Larger damage and non-functional targeting can lead to side effects.
- Brain and damage has delayed effect (weeks).
- Complications appeared months to years post procedure and most commonly consisted of mild contralateral numbness and transient hemiparesis. Rarely, more severe complications were reported, including dysphagia and death.
